On RnB and Generating Inspiration: Alesia Lani, R&B Songstress

Raised here in Austin, Texas, artist Alesia Lani imparts a soulful sound and emotive songwriting on a creative community that — for all its live music offerings — could step it up when it comes to R&B. 

Having been awarded Austin's "Best R&B Artist" in both 2015 and 2016, Lani is currently working on her sophomore album, "Resilient."

How do you feel about the creative community here — specifically the R&B scene?

I feel it's very small, yet broad. As we know, R&B is not the most popular genre especially in Austin Texas, but I feel that's what makes it special. Mastering the art of R&B by giving people the feel and emotion is what it's about.

You focus on music full-time. When your art is your “job,” how do you stay inspired to keep creating?

Inspiration for me comes in all shapes, sizes and forms. From interactions with others, people watching and familiar smell that sparks a memory. I see music as color, in waves, in any form. Continuously being inspired I feel, makes me a dope songwriter and visionary.

How do you deal with heartbreak — professional or otherwise?

Oh gosh — one day at a time. Having to find the strength to pick your chin up and keep on trucking. I feel time heals all wounds and giving yourself 110 percent helps.

Favorite album of 2017 so far?

Hands down Thundercat’s “Drunk.”

What is your earliest music memory?

Ahh, the first time I fell in love with music, was when I was very young. I remember hearing “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” by Bone Thugs N Harmony. Ever since, I had a special ear for music and I would listen to it like crazy, learning all the songs on the radio and putting on shows for my mom and brother.
